You Are What You Eat
I guess it’s always been my belief that you are what you eat when it comes to the books, music, movies, etc. that you consume. Of course I think there is a lot more to a person’s character than that, but I believe that what you choose to do with your own, precious time says a lot about you. And many of the books, TV shows, movies, and music I’ve liked over the years have their own rabid cult following, but I don’t really fit in with that crowd either.
In my daily life as a Mom, wife, professional, people have a disconnect with who I think of as me – the person who would sit in her car in the garage for an hour to finish a good book on CD (after my son is in bed, of course), or gladly take my husband and son to a comic book convention and have as much fun as them, or devour Entertainment Weekly from cover to cover each week (I’m not ashamed to say – sometimes in the bathroom) and actually read the book reviews, or know what a Dalek is. Thank goodness my husband is a fellow nerd, but our nerd tastes go in different directions when it comes to books, sci fi, and – well, plenty of other things.
Sure I like Bridget Jones, Sex and the City, and other things that women are supposed to like. Heck, I even liked Legally Blonde and Charlie’s Angels. I just need an outlet for this inner nerd who also loves bad CG, good special effects, Victorian London, superheroes, Regency England, eccentric characters, and anything else weird or interesting. But not too much violence. I’m still a Mom.
